Many people call our office in need of Temporary Power, and most have no clue where to start. We hope this blog will be helpful for those seeking information or starting a project that may require Temporary Power Poles.
- Check your property for available power distribution.
There are 2 primary types of power distributions used in coordination of Temporary Power. Overhead transformers and Underground Transformers/Hand hole Boxes.
Over Head Transformers are mounted to the providers pole, they look like a round can and generally have a transformer number on them. This can be confusing because many people think that Telephone and Power source is the same thing. Your Temporary Power Pole will be set within 100' of this overhead power feed.
Underground Service. These come in many forms, the most common being Pad Mounted. A Pad mounted transformer is that green box you see in your easement areas. It covers and distributes the electrical feed. Your temporary power service will be set within 30" to the right of the knockout on this structure.
2. Establish your electrical provider. In Southern California there are a few, so starting with the right service planner is key.
Southern California Edison http://www.sce.com/AboutSCE/CompanyOverview/territorymap.htm
Notice the small sections of white within the service map. These small areas are made up of the following companies.
City of Riverside
City of Moreno Valley Utilities
We have also provided a list of the service planners by area and other service requirements on our website at www.rightwayportable.com.
3. Contact your service planner and make application for temporary service. They should give you a work order # that indicates your application. They will also advise you on where you are pulling power from and what the voltage is. Typical voltage is 120/240 and 120/208.
4. Figure out how far the approved location is from where you want to drop power on the project. This will help you decide where to place the trailer (if used) and if you need more than 1 pole.
5. Get your permits from the City or County that you are working in. This is the largest misconception about getting Temp Power. The City or County will require that you have some sort or FEES PAID before they will issue temp power permits against a project. These permits are separate from the temporary power permits, however you may be able to save some $$ if you have your temp information available when you are at the counter.
6. Get a temp electrical permit, they will then establish an address for the meter pole. You will need this address marked in stencil on the meter pole for the inspection and so SCE can find it. Pay your electrical application and BINGO!! you are ready for action
don't forget about dig alert! www.digalert.org or http://www.call811.com/
7. Set the poles
8. Order inspection
9. Get the Meter set from SCE and YAY!! you have power.
As you might have noticed it is pretty involved and it is important to allow enough time for each jurisdiction to do there part!
